Northwestsoutheastern celbrated the tenth anniversary of their sole previous national title in grand fashion: by going undefeated through the regular season, ranked through most of it number one, and doing so as relatively the finest Fighting Pacifist team of all time. Nwse scored an average of 53 points per game, giving them the second greatest offense ever, after the Puke team of just two years ago. Although the 1983 championship team was considered an offensive giant in its day, it doesn't come close to its decade successor. There were other famoust proficient Pacifist teams, such as the '86 team that previously the third best offensive team ever, and the '88 squad. But neither of those won national championships. Now, the perhaps most disappointed of perennials shoots for its second league championship.
Virgil Reality, who as a freshman had already put his name on the marquee of famous Nwse quarterbacks (Curtis Seekup, Warren Peace, Nicholson Dimes), may become the greatest one of all. He won the Demetrius Award in this, his sophomore year, the first sophomore to do so since Jack Rabbit in 1978, the first since the award became SCAB-wide. Sophomore running back Nick Romancer continued his rocketing notoriety scoring 20 TDs. Tight end Lou Slips had 19. Both of them got more than superstar wide receiver Homer Sekshule, who was double-teamed throught the year, but still got 13 TDs.
Despite relinquishing superpower status to Nwse, Puke made 1993 anotehr jewel in its crown. The two-time defending champion Mess stretched its winning streak into this season, surpassing the SCAB record (32 by Kootsville Tech 1979-81) on the third week. Puke climbed to 38 straight games without a loss, finally topping off when heritage rival South Paw upset them October 30. In the same stroke, Puke set the mark for most consecutive regular-season wins at 49, dating back to 1989. The only loss in that span was a tournament game, the Eastern Semifinal to Porkbelly in 1990.
